Based on the history of the United Arab Emirates, the opera will be staged for the first time

The first national opera on the history of the United Arab Emirates will be presented next year.

By the start of the Dubai Expo 2020, Muhammad Fireouz and Maha Gargash will create the first national opera dedicated to the UAE. A work entitled Al Wasl tells the story of the UAE’s rich heritage dating back thousands of years.

The plot will focus on the Bedouin roots of the nation, and then set off on a journey to the current achievements of the UAE as a modern multicultural world center and end with the future of the country.

“This story is about the change of generations, young and old people who are learning to listen to each other,” says Muhammad Faruz.

The two-hour opera is being created in partnership with the Welsh National Opera. The premiere will take place next October at the Dubai Opera and will be timed to coincide with the official opening of Expo 2020. The presentation will be delivered in Arabic and English. It will involve more than 100 artists and musicians, as well as a team of 70 specialists.

Composer Muhammad Fayruz added: “We draw inspiration from the present, proudly looking back at our history and looking forward with hope. It is a great honor for me to create an opera in collaboration with Expo 2020, and I am pleased to demonstrate this unprecedented work at the Dubai Opera next year "Al Wasl sheds light on the rich history of our people and nation, as well as how we spread humanity and generosity throughout the world."
