More eco-friendly taxis will appear in Abu Dhabi

In the emirate of Abu Dhabi will appear more than a thousand taxis with a hybrid engine.

The taxi fleet in the emirate of Abu Dhabi will replenish with cars powered by a hybrid engine. Transport company Tawasul will acquire hybrid vehicles to replace a fleet of 1,374 gasoline-powered cars. To date, the company has already received 852 of these cars.

“Hybrid cars show fuel savings of up to 70% compared with gasoline-only cars. Moreover, these vehicles are easier to maintain because their engines are less subject to wear and tear,” explained Mr. Al Kamzi, Director General of the Emirate’s Integrated Transport Center .

"Despite the fact that the purchase of cars requires start-up investments, the transition to hybrid transport is profitable in the long term, we hope that all taxi companies will follow our example," the director added.

Mr. Al Kamzi made a speech at a conference in which Al Futtaim Motors, a dealer in the UAE in the UAE, announced the transfer of its first batch of hybrid vehicles to Tawasul.

Currently, 6147 taxis operate in the emirate, they are served by eight different franchisees. All taxis are regulated by the Integrated Transport Center. The taxi fleet, like buses, is part of the emirate’s public transport system.

New hybrid cars will be presented by the Toyota brand, namely Toyota Camry - cars consume only one liter of gasoline per 26 kilometers. For comparison, one liter of fuel for a 2.5-liter Camry gasoline is only 17 kilometers long. Thus, the use of 852 hybrid taxis instead of their gas "colleagues" will lead to a reduction in carbon emissions by 44 million kg over their entire life cycle.

“Fuel is one of the biggest expenditures for any taxi company, switching to hybrid cars will help to significantly reduce the operating costs of enterprises. As I understand it, during short trips around the city these cars do not consume fuel at all, using only electricity,” said Mr. Al Camsey.
