L'Artisan Parfumeur. Parisian chic and Africa

Interviewed: Olga Olkhovskaya

In this issue, we decided to continue our excursion into the world of aromas, both the newest and those with many years and even centuries of history. To get lost in this world is quite difficult if you do not know its subtleties and secrets. The secrets of this bizarre world, its vivid emotions, hidden desires and amazing discoveries were revealed to us by leading perfumers and representatives of famous fashion houses. The most entertaining part of our trip is that after touching the world of sensual ideas and their manifestations, I don’t want to leave it so soon ...

L'Artisan Parfumeur, founded by perfumer Jean Laporte in 1976, quickly took a leading position in the field of luxury perfumes. Laporte was inspired by the old traditions of French perfumery art. His first fragrance “Mure et Musc” became a hit. Nick Stewart, L'Artisan Parfumeur international marketing expert, visited Dubai in early spring, where we met for a cup of tea at the L'Artisan brand boutique in Dubai Mall to talk about luxury perfumes and today ...

Nick, tell me, how does L'Artisan perfume fundamentally differ from everything that is presented on the market today?

Our House is unique in that we work as artists, and outstanding modern perfumers such as Bertrand Duchaffo, Emma Lovers and others collaborate with us. One of the distinguishing features of the company is our ongoing research and development, which allows us to keep our products in the premium class.

What line of fragrances marked the beginning of the story of L'Artisan Parfumeur?

The original idea of the perfumer and chemist Jean Laporte, the founder of the company, was to, following French perfume traditions, be able to create something special, break stereotypes and step beyond the generally accepted rules. The first perfumes of “Mure et Musk” were avant-garde and unusual, the same trend is observed today. Even our bottles are made in the south of France almost by hand, so that when buying our perfumes, a person could immediately feel that he is acquiring a work of art. And not just perfume. By the way, we constantly resort to the services of international artists so that they develop packaging designs for our fragrances.

Who are fans of the spirits of L'Artisan?

The tastes of customers in different countries differ from each other, but I would say that these are people who gravitate towards art, who cannot be led astray even by bright advertising. They know exactly what they want, and they never acquire perfume just because a particular celebrity is engaged in their advertising campaign. They need something unique. Our fans travel a lot. They know well London, Moscow, Paris and Dubai. They are well informed about what is happening in the world of fashion, but at the same time they crave new discoveries.

We invite everyone to the world of our fragrances - to our branded boutiques. We do not crush and do not force. Buyers must find their own way and their own fragrance. We are for individuality. We do not even divide our perfumes into male and female. People themselves find their own fragrance and, by the way, do not change it. And we like it. This is the Universe L'Artisan, our art in its purest form.

Why do some fragrances remain popular for centuries, while others are forgotten after a couple of years?

I think that every flavor has its own time. And earlier it was easier for perfume houses to create perfume-icons, because then there wasn’t such a huge selection of perfume and cosmetic products. But still, the brilliant perfumers have managed and succeeded great classic aromas. The popularity of certain spirits, as it seems to me, is a deep emotional attachment to them. There are eternal flavors, but there are massive. And everyone has their own fans.

What flavor do you present in Dubai today?

Today in Dubai we present the amazing, sunny and juicy fragrance “Timbuktu”. This is a true fairytale of wanderings that takes you to the African savannah. Perfumes are filled with notes of fresh green mango, exotic spices, precious caro-karund flower, papaya, patchouli, myrrh and vetiver. They are impulsive, a little wild, ultra-sensual and mystical.

And which perfumes are the best seller of L'Artisan?

From the moment they were created in 1978 until today, our bestseller is the perfume “Mure et Musk”. They are full of fresh and joyful aromas of blackberries with a fruity “heart” and a soft and sensual “base” of musk. It's unforgettable!

Thanks Nick. And see you soon.
